I found the error. It was basically not a build error but rather the
build host ran out of available memory:

I am running squeeze 64bits in a virtual environment originally with
512 MB memory which apparently is to small. Increasing memory to 1024
MB solved the problem.

Maybe the build instructions should mention something about memory
requirements?
