Virtio is intended to be a common framework for IO virtualization in 
hypervisors. I don't know off hand to what extent it has been adopted by 
VMware or VB.

It appears that VMware is supporting virtio drivers (at least to some 
extent, in VCAC):

It appears that VB has virtio nic support:
http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch06.html#nichardware
but it doesn't appear that virtio disk is an option (yet).
