You are correct, the Alix board is a flash install with the 512 MB of memory 
divided between the RAM disk (128 MB for /tmp and 128 MB for /ram) and 256 
MB for system memory.

df shows only 50MB is in use in /ram and 0 MB in /tmp so maybe there is an 
opportunity to recover some memory from the ram disk.

Also I am not running all available services, IPsec, OpenVPN Server and URL 
Filter are stopped.

Significantly this system has run faultlessly for 4 years in this 
configuration with 1.9 and 2.0 versions, and is only showing problems since 
the 2.1 upgrade. This does seem to be a peak loading problem which would 
seem to have increased with the latest release of software.
