Of course it errors, everything in the build source is optimized to compile as x86 with certain optimization flags in the configs for i486. Some programs and libraries may not even be ported to 64 bit yet so they cannot be compiled at 64 bit even with the proper flags if this is the case. There was mention of whether there should be a 64 bit version of IPCop in the future. Most platforms that a firewall appliance would be run on including some very new expensive ones are not 64 bit. 64 bit is not even on my radar for a firewall appliance. A decade ago I remember how difficult it was for the developers of many Linux programs and libraries to port them over to 64 bit. Some audio libraries never did get ported as well as some programs. You can run a 32 bit os on an x86_64 system and 32 bit programs on a 64 bit os with 32 bit compatibility libraries but that is as far as compatibility goes. To compile as 64 bit it has to have been ported to be able to do so. Most Windows programs people run in 64 bit Windows including Firefox are still 32 bit and nobody is the wiser. Adobe refused to port flash to 64 bit for the longest time and I don't know if they ever did. The one thing you absolutely cannot do is run 32 bit drivers in a 64 bit kernel. If one could easily do what you tried, there'd be 64 bit IPCop iso's all over the internet people built. Short of going through the entire os build tree and changing things and hoping everything in lfs actually has 64 bit compatible code, at this point you have all but created your own Franken- distro. -- Dave Studeman http://www.raqcop.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Download BIRT iHub F-Type - The Free Enterprise-Grade BIRT Server from Actuate!
