The immediate need was Internet access out in the woods, with only a laptop and no firewall. For this, the Netgear AC791L is perfect; the battery can keep the 791 running 24 hours continuously at the maximum data rate. But, having purchased the 791, I would like also to be able to use it with a LAN sitting behind a firewall. Verizon has G3/G4 routers which appear comparable to the CradlePoint and which have ethernet output. Some have a small battery, but they are intended to be powered by an AC adapter.
