You may get a flood (or no) replies to this question. Put simply, the firewall is your first line of defence against people in the internet trying to directly get into your network. Every extra item of software running on that server / device is an additional chunk that can have code or configuration defects, so increases the risk of a vulnerably and decreases your security. So, what you’ve proposed is a Bad Idea (tm) and will be ignored or derided. Others may be able to comment on the safety of running multiple VMs in a host and running IPCop in one of the VMs as the gateway / first line of defence.
