Question about manually running the plugin update

I'm a new customer....  Now, I realize that I can check the a file and 
verify the plugin status, but I tried running (as root) and ran 
/opt/nessus/sbin/nessus-update-plugins.  The results below:

beta:~ # /opt/nessus/sbin/nessus-update-plugins
An error occured while updating the plugins :  Access denied
Could not retrieve the plugins MD5
Aborting


Any idea what is happening here?
