You may have many nessusd processes all running and competing for resources. And of course, you could add a bit of ram to that system to put it on par with the Windows XP box. As for the port scanners, as Michel said, there are different port scanners used for each OS, which is why you see slightly different port scan options from each Nessus scanner.
