*Just a note about a failure to update and **Windows Update History not
showing the eventaul status.

**While Windows Update was downloading and installing 6 critical
updates on a previously fully patched Windows 2000 box **the install
process failed at about 50% complete**.
Network access is via a reliable fast cable .
The process hung for several minutes with 0 activity showing in Task
Manager for update.exe.
The update process could only be cancelled by clicking the X in the
progress dialog box.
A second and third attempt to perform the update both resulted in a
fast run through the download dialog without further updates being applied.

After re-booting and re-trying Windows Update, four of the six updates
occured and show as having been installed in the installation history.
The **Security Update for Windows 2000 (KB893066*) *appears once in the
in installation history as failed.
**Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1
(KB890923) appears in the installation history three times as failed.
Both show as installed in (Add/Remove Programs) and neither appear as
unapplied when windows update is executed .

Consequently the Windows Update History appears incorrect.

NTBugtraq Editor's Note:

Most viruses these days use spoofed email addresses. As such, using an Anti-Virus product which automatically notifies the perceived sender of a message it believes is infected may well cause more harm than good. Someone who did not actually send you a virus may receive the notification and scramble their support staff to find an infection which never existed in the first place. Suggest such notifications be disabled by whomever is responsible for your AV, or at least that the idea is considered.
