1) They had the *effective* choice of releasing it under GPL or not at all,
since part of it is hooks into the kernel which is itself GPL.  Since it's
GPL, the kernel side will be shipped as part of the stock 2.6 kernel.  If
it hadn't been GPL, they'd have had to play the same sort of games as NVidia
does with their graphics drivers (and no, before you ask, NVidia *cant* GPL
those, as they contain other people's licensed code that's not GPL compatible).
And since the goal was to get widespread adoption of the code.....

2) What, *exactly* would Microsoft be integrating this code *INTO*?  It's
so Linux-specific that even a *BSD port is essentially out of the question.
