I've only seen ls to hung in nfs situations, where
the nfs server is not accessible.

Who do you get your users? Local passwd, NIS, ldap?
Maybe it tries to find the users/groups and it cant.

What is your entry in /etc/nsswitch.conf for
passwd and group?

If does not have to do with users try \/bin/ls -l
