You can always run ClamAV on a different box, and for example pipe the data to be scanned directly to the clamd socket - I could offer a Perl script to get you started with that - or remote mount the filesystems to be scanned, or ... Having said that if you're stuck with obsolete software then running or not running ClamAV is the least of your problems.
