Thanks, Rainer and Derrick. I followed both of your advices, and even
found in the INSTALL document where my eyes skipped over the missing .so
when installing to Samba 3.0+ part, *three times* ... sigh.

I do think that Rainer's suggestion would have worked alon, as I
actually had debian-patched sources (installed by apt-get source samba),
I then built that tree and built samba-vscan in that context, but better
safe than sorry.

vscan-clamav now happily quarantining eicar test files. Hopefully (yeah,
 dream on) it never needs to find anything else.
