Yes, Virge is broken, and as far as I know nobody is working on it. The problem is that I didn't expect emails to have null bytes in them, and I was very wrong in that assumption. If you want to fix it, this is only one of the known problems you'll have to work on. I'd suggest amavisd-new with clamd and sophie as a replacement, but anything else you choose will most probably work better than Virge. Sorry.
