I have FreeBSD ports available (from which you can make binary packages)
for SAVI and Sophie at http://www.roughtrade.net/bsd/ that work around
this issue and include a nightly update mechanism.

They are known to work with Sophie 3.4rc2 and SAVI 3.82 on both
FreeBSD 5.2-CURRENT and 4.10-STABLE.

Even if you don't want to use ports/packages, examining the makefiles
and diffs will be instructive.

Regards
Joshua.
