Mystery solved. Turned out to be a softlimit problem. I increased sophie's softlimit from 20 MB to 25 MB and now it will start. Thanks to Alain Fauconnet for demonstrating that freebsd 4.9/sophie 1.44/sav 3.90 will actually work together, eliminating incompatiblity as a source of the problem.
