I am seeing that exact same behavior but think I might have something new 
to offer.  If I change the user for sophie to run as in sophie.cfg to root 
then everything works when it is daemonized.  Could someone else try this 
and see if they get the same result?

I do not see how that fixes the problem cause sophie works fine with the 
older version of sophos and all the permissions are correct for the user 
tha sophie runs as.  Even though the change works it has left me more 
confused.
