No, you can just send a HUP to the process using kill, just like you would 
do to inetd.
>From the startup script I'm using:

    reload)
        pid=`cat /var/run/sophie.pid`
        kill -HUP $pid

I have what I hope is a quick question --

When I update my Sophos Antivirus definition IDEs, do I need to restart 
the sophie service in order to take advantage of the updated definitions?
