  Don't forget the hybrid approach.

  Our church had a fundraising auction for goods/services.  I offered an
hour of my time, the church got the money -- I found that the winning
bidder's onboard Ethernet chip had died and helped them buy/install a
separate Ethernet card.  Everyone was happy, and I could itemize it as a tax
deduction.
