Jay, I was forwarding a Sun Alert (Sun Alert ID: 57454) that was released by Sun. I should have made the source of the information more clear. I am not a big fan of HIGH, MEDIUM, LOW as severity has a lot to do with the context of the vulnerability in the real world. This would certainly be a critical issue on a public shell box. I think descriptive severities that force the reader to apply the severity to their situation are much more useful. Something like, "Local users can obtain root access". In this case Sun did that but also tacked on MEDIUM. If I was forced to give a severity in one word I would agree with you that this is probably a HIGH. I think it is pretty likely that this is exploitable if Sun is issuing a patch and bulletin but I can't say for sure. -Chris On Sat, 6 Mar 2004, Jay D.
