I got it to work. As you can see i've been working my way from the bottom up 
on the digest, and I was getting ready to go over your message when I 
realized that during all my tries today connecting to localhost I had the 
rdp client set to 127.0.0.2:11965 when it should have been 127.0.0.2 without 
a port number, defaulting to 3389. Furthermore, the localhost on XP seems to 
be really 127.0.0.1, but i have to tell the rdp client to connect to .2 
because rdp will not launch when the target is the console it is running on.

so thanks to everyone for helping me thru this. you've all been very 
helpful.
