Hello,

In .htaccess on my s9y installation, s9y generated this
line:

ErrorDocument 404 /index.php

This is not necessary since I am using mod_rewrite for
URL rewriting.

What's more, it's harmful.  I recently switched from a
different blog software on this domain, and old URLs
*should* be given a 404.  Otherwise, bots and humans
will believe that these old URLs are still valid, and
all sorts of oddity can occur.  Among other things,
requests for image files or XML feeds could be
fulfilled with HTML documents.

You are right, it is not necessary. But we use it as a
fallback method in case mod_rewrite has problems or a Rule
is not properly entered. In the past we had problematic
RewriteRules, but the blog was still running because of the
ErrorHandling fallback.

In your case you could manually adjust your .htaccess file,
but the case you're having usually happens less often and
would make things worse for the usual user and only improve
the situation in rare(r) cases. URLs that do not match any
s9y pattern DO emit a 404 header (even they show content),
so bots should recognize that 404.
