No article had been tagged with a category. Clicking the category name in the sidebar correctly displayed an user-facing HTML page for that category showing no entries. Clicking the icon for the RSS feed however showed all the articles. When you click on a category-RSS feed (like /feeds/categories/2-categoryname.rss) this should really work properly, and yield an empty feed. You could check if the same occurs when calling rss.php?category=2 directly. If that works differently, your URL rewriting might be the reason.
