Initial Comment:
I had added a category to my blog, and published two articles.  No article had been tagged with a category.  Clicking the category name in the sidebar correctly displayed an user-facing HTML page for that category showing no entries.  Clicking the icon for the RSS feed however showed all the articles.  This happened in 1.5.2.

What's your exactl URL of the RSS feed you clicked on? When you click on a
category-RSS feed (like /feeds/categories/2-categoryname.rss) this should
really work properly, and yield an empty feed.

You could check if the same occurs when calling rss.php?category=2
directly. If that works differently, your URL rewriting might be the
reason.
