It's been a long while since I recompiled on anything that age, but up
through 5.9 the configuration support for old compilers/libraries was
still present, so you might actually be successful with that version.
Quite a bit of such legacy support was removed for the forthcoming
5.10 release.

For anything that actually dates from that era you'd have to go back
to zsh-3.1.something.
