Dear Dr. Susan Bassein and Karl Berry,
=C2=A0
Thank you for your responses with advice on setting up DAP.=C2=A0 I tried t=
o set=C2=A0DAP up on Cygwin, but was unsuccessful.=C2=A0 First I downloaded=
the default package of Cygwin; though the default program is missing the '=
make' unix command.=C2=A0 Then I found out how to download Cygwin with 'mak=
e' but after running the './configure' command some required=C2=A0configura=
tion elements were not found.=C2=A0 Without these=C2=A0'make'=C2=A0did not =
execute completely, terminating abruptly.=C2=A0 I tried to download the com=
plete non-default Cygwin, but=C2=A0it's size was too large and stopped afte=
r 40% completion.=C2=A0 I=C2=A0was able to do the initial 'de-tarring' of '=
dap-3.7' using the default Cygwin,=C2=A0making file folders 'src,' 'doc,' a=
nd 'examples.'=C2=A0 However, I never=C2=A0got to the point where the 'exec=
utables,' 'includes,'=C2=A0'library,' and 'info' files become installed in =
subdirectories 'bin,' 'include,' 'lib,' and 'info' of '/usr/local'.=C2=A0 L=
astly, when reading some=C2=A0online discussions of Cygwin, I
found it has=C2=A0difficulty executing the 'rehash' command, the last step=
 of installation.
=C2=A0
I welcome any further thoughts you may have=C2=A0on running DAP through Win=
dows98.=C2=A0 Someone suggested I look=C2=A0into the free linux-type=C2=A0c=
d program called=C2=A0Ubuntu.=C2=A0 I'm also looking=C2=A0for access to a m=
achine that already runs unix.=C2=A0 My unix programming skills are at=C2=
=A0the beginner level; so I welcome any further explanation of the DAP unix=
 installation and start-up=C2=A0instructions.=C2=A0 I=C2=A0regret I was una=
ble to get far with=C2=A0this set-up.=C2=A0 I wasn't able to access the man=
ual; as=C2=A0the 'info' subdirectory was not created.=C2=A0 Thank you for r=
eading of my attempts,=C2=A0and sharing with me your=C2=A0time, thoughts,=
=C2=A0and assistance.

Dear David, Karl:

DAP runs only under UNIX or UNIX-like systems. You can run cygwin
(www.cygwin.com) under some versions of Windows (at least XP) and that prov=
ides
a UNIX-like environment under which you can run DAP. You can also install s=
ome
version of UNIX as a dual-boot operating system along with your Windows.
