You can't drop a .rockbox directory into UMSboot, that will only accept
.ubi files. So you can boot an installer or a rockbox binary that way,
but the files in that ramdisk are neither written to the HDD nor can
they be accessed by rockbox.

Updating to a recent build helps a lot with battery drain problems,
there have been quite a few improvements in that area (also overall
stability improvements, but sadly we now have some USB problems) since
the bundled build from january.

Yes, Windows refuses to format drives bigger than about 50GB with FAT.
There are third party tools to do that though, and you can also do it
from the emCORE tools menu. If the disk isn't accessible after doing the
latter you most likely have physical HDD trouble.
