If we wanted to draw the splash in the center of the screen, instead, it would be required to remove the backdrop first, for that to look ok. Which introduces additional problems, having to do with the background color you choose - either the theme color or the default LCD color, i.e. usually black. In the latter case, it may not be obvious when the device has fully turned off if the splash is disabled.
