So, even if I named the file mail.xlsx it would know it was a mail box 
file and allow me to copy mail file entries from it?

Easy. Open your Admin client, go to the Files tab. Change Show Me to "All 
file types." Select mail.old and it will open.

Or, you can click on File - Application - Open, select your server, and 
enter mail.old in the file name field.
