The three specification fields we already use. I had a look at
alternative item reference, but I don't think this will work in the way
I want: as you say it might cause issues elsewhere, and as I'm nowhere
near an S21 manufacturing expert ( yet ;-)) ), I'd rather not risk that
route. One of the reasons for wanting the moulds to be an inventory item
is that they are actually manufactured from silica sand, hence have a
BOM associated, and later destroyed as part of the production process. I
want eventually, if possible, to get the system to plan our production
and generate material requirements.

This might cause issues elsewhere but could be researched.
In the Item Master there are also the three fields that are user
defined, Specification 1,2,3 (only issue might be that they are all
numeric).
These are defined in the company profile and if not already used are
another option.

I have an "interesting" problem that I hope someone can help with. I'm
using standard System 21 v3.5.2.b. I know it's old, but it's what I have
to work with!

I make parts from a mould, and each mould might produce 2 or more parts,
the same or different, depending on a number of factors (part
size/weight/configuration, etc). I want to hold the part and the mould
as separate items on S21, but I would also like to be able to identify
the mould part number from the product item record so that I can link
part/mould records from an external query. Just to complicate matters,
we can possibly have more than one mould to make a part, and each mould
has impression numbers for each part that the mould can produce. For
example, part number 123 is made from moulds m1 and m2, and each mould
makes three parts. Mould m1 has impressions 1, 2, and 3, and mould m2
has impressions 4, 5, and 6. Each part produced will have the impression
number moulded onto it, as well as a date code.

I thought I could use the feature code FTCD35 on inp35 to hold the mould
number currently being used, but I can't see anywhere that I can
maintain this field using the standard software. I'm not an RPG
programmer, so I can't bespoke the item maintenance program. We already
use the three user-defined specification fields in INP35 for other data.

Any ideas?
