I suggest you start by looking at the Inventory Management book, the
topic is on page 2-21 in the R7 version.

Thank you to everyone who has replied so far. 
 
OK, management has decided that backflushing is the way to go.  I have
until the end of the day to get four items with four componets setup for
backflushing.  Anyone got a 30 minute turtotral on how to set up
backflushing?
 
I found a series of manuals starting with MAPICSXA.pdf but nothing on
backflushing.
