I've had the same idea lately.

Basically, how to get some version control and updating capability that
still maintained the coolness of the AS400?

I had an opportunity to use some Perl on a Linux box. We needed a couple of
additional items to complete our project and loved how CPAN worked to
download all required components and automatically install. I don't know if
anything like that is available on the iSeries.

For the actual code, I like the XML format that was developed a couple of
years ago. You can integrate commands into the install routine and they had
install routines that ran either from the AS400 (cut from the xml or if
already installed just run) or from a PC. If save files weren't quite so
fussy, the bug busters install-aid solution would work nicely.

What else is out there for the iSeries?

I would like to know what you think is the best way to package and release
OSS for the iSeries platform?  Is there some OSS project you think is
remarkable from this point of view?  Are some OSS-hosting sites more
'iSeries friendly' than others?  What kind of issues do you run into when
you try to install, compile and run OSS on your iSeries?

For PCs, it is straightforward.  Just put your sources in a CVS or SVN
repository, and anybody can download and build the software.  But for the
iSeries, doing it that way would mean losing all meta-information like
source type (e.g., RPGLE) and comments.  A SAVF file would keep the
meta-information, but I have had several bad experiences with SAVF that I
could not restore because of authority problems (I do not have a security
officer profile).
