Hi all. I sent the below inquiry to Scott Klement, who suggested I post it
to the OSS400 list. I am working on an article for iSeries Network that
concerns open sourcing of applications, and thought I'd see if you had any
comments/perspectives to offer.

A reader inquired about the potential of open sourcing Office Vision, seeing
as its no longer supported by IBM anyway. Apparently it's too integrated
with OS/400 for that to be feasible, but the concept still struck me as
interesting. Is there any potential under certain circumstances in IBM open
sourcing some of its code? Couldn't open sourcing discontinued
applications/tools, for example, translate to new applications for the
iSeries -- as the open source community ran with it?

Along those lines, are there particular iSeries tools/applications/offerings
that are no longer supported that would be particularly appropriate for the
open source community -- and not as much a risk for IBM to offer? Or are
there even tools that are still supported but that could benefit both IBM
and users by being donated to the open source community (Scott suggested Ops
Nav for example -- release it open-source and let the community port it to
Linux and FreeBSD and the various other operating systems.)

That's what I'm looking into. Any and all comment would be appreciated!!
Feel free to email me at the below address.

Thank you so much for your time.
