As discussed on the midrange-l list, sometimes IBM's implementation of smtp may be down and therefore using the modem as a fallback is a good option. Actually have one vendor where it's a no charge to use the modem, but if your email pages exceed a rather small amount they start heaping on some hefty charges. I like the price of open source. Paying $10,000 for paging software rather galls me. Open source isn't tiered priced. Most cells and alpha-pages now have an e-mail address associated with them so isn't "paging" software just email.
