Just for the archives, I also posted this to midrange-l (after the topic 
wavered over to system values).  But Tom, I agree. QSTRPRTWTR doesn't get 
reset until the next IPL.

Luckily I have an iseries that I can IPL at will.

I did extensive testing on this.  As we know, QSTRPRTWTR is not a system 
value that we can change, it is only a display one.  Much like QIPLSTS, 
QABNORMSW, etc.  If you want an action like a mythical CHGSYSVAL 
QSTRPRTWTR would be, then you can do this one of two ways:  One, IPL in 
manual mode and override it.  Two, prior to the IPL do a CHGIPLA 
STRPRTWTR(...  If you set it to *NO then after the next IPL QSTRUP will 
not start the writers and system value QSTRPRTWTR will be set to 0, do not 
start.  Somewhere during, or after, the IPL it does a CHGIPLA again and 
sets the value for STRPRTWTR back to it's default of *YES, so the NEXT ipl 
will automatically start printer writers and set the system value 
QSTRPRTWTR back to it's default.

I can work with this.  My program worked fine.

See extended help for system value QSTRPRTWTR. I've never checked, but I 
don't think it gets "reset" during IPL. Once it's on, it stays on until 
the next IPL. A simple CLP showed it on here.
