Thanks for your warning Frank, One thought that springs to my mind about the current capabilities is, was it a holder with "spring"-type contacts or with "flat bent metal strip"-type contacts? For some reason I have a feeling the latter should withstand more current due to better surface area. That is, even if 1.2A-capable battery holders exist at all -- 'cause 1.2 amps is quite a ton for a usual AA battery pack in general. Worst case scenario, just don't charge them inside the eMate and use a simple charger externally instead, I guess.
