Well a PMCIA card reader won't help you unless you want to clone/image/backup/restore a card to the same size card.  The Newton doesn't use a file system (like most OS) but a database system and you can't just throw things at it with a PCMICA card reader at it.

The best thing to do is get a USB to serial adapter and cable/dongle (I think the dongles are harder to find at this point) to install packages/backup.
