OK, here are some stories/thoughts.

I have several machines at home.  I get a new disk, add it to one
machine and slice it up.  I move things around from other machines to
consolidate disk space, potentially re-slicing the other machines.

On one of my older machines, /usr/local fills (or an ancient SCSI drive
fails) and I have to move partitions (or drives) around.  The new drive
is Seriously bigger than the one that died, so a fair amount of
reslicing gets done (in parallel, as some of these may be boot partitions).

Time passes, and my home directory becomes Really Big.  I move my home
direrctory to another slice on a different drive (or machine).  I may
reslice the original home directory drive and reallocate resources.

I collect even more source code.  Customers pay their bills and there's
enough money left over after the roof repairs so I can buy a couple of
new machines to replace/augment some of my old 486/33 boxes.  One of
these has enough disk on it that I can turn it into a dedicated NFS
server, and start rearranging disk drives on the remaining system so my
amanda spool is big enough and I can begin the disk partition migration
process.

I slice and dice and repartition again...

At work, the test lab machines have a dedicated OS/login drive, and
every other drive is left unsliced until we know how the folks want to
use it (database slices, filesystem partitions, more swap, whatever).

Sometimes, we take unused drives out of one machine and put them into
other machines.
