In the face of all of this activity I'd like to ask people to run the
"configure" script on various host types and compare the resulting .xml
files with the ones in ../host and let me know about any differences.

I'd like to get this piece fully working.

You'll probably need to have:

 autogen-5.1.5    <ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/autogen/autogen-5.1.5.tar.gz>
 autoconf-2.50	  <ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/autoconf/autoconf-2.50.tar.gz>
 automake-1.4-p2  <ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/automake/automake-1.4-p2.tar.gz>

or later installed to run the ./:bootstrap script.
