Damn. You got me Will. I didn't have an old installation to try. Just 
trawled through the CVS repository for PyXML and it looks like 
'xml.version_info' didn't appear until version 0.6.0, so it's a fairly 
unreliable indicator of features.

I've taken your code and moved it around a bit to make a bit more sense 
and ditched the version number test. I'm just using exceptions now. So 
it'll try PyXML >= 0.5.6 method, then old PyXML method, then minidom.
