I thought Python 2.1 had all the guts in it and then hit this very same 
error. I discovered that Python has to be built in the presence of 
libexpat to be able to parse XML. The configure script goes looking for 
it and disables the pyexpat reader unless it finds it. Unfortunately, it 
seems that the pyexpat reader is the only one it comes with.

I don't understand why they didn't include a basic string parser so you 
can always make it work. Or perhaps they do and I just haven't found it, 
suggestions welcome.

Python 2.0 is even more of a pain as you have to look for libexpat 
yourself and manually configure the Setup file.
