Here's the nickle tour of OpenPackages I promised. OP is a portable implementation of the auto-dependency, -download, -patch, -configure, -build, and binary packaging system used by the *BSD projects. As I understand it, the initial OS list will include *BSD, Linux, Darwin, Solaris (7 and 8, at least), HP-UX 10 and 11. There are also folks working on Irix and AIX ports. The last time I looked, the "auto fetch" part of ARK was not yet implemented, and there was no great way to handle applying patches to stock distributions. I'm thinking that there is MUCH to be gained by having the ARK and OP groups work together and share code. We're just about at the place where OP will bootstrap itself and pass an initial sandbox test, and I think we're just about ready for some early adopter and tester folks. Any takers? H
