Joel, obviously all my brain cells that used to remember
details of this stuff have died :-); I will of course be
happy to try to work through various "I typed this, it
shoulda done that, but instead it did thus" scenarios.

One idea that might work is to do steps 1-3 as one team
(teamA?) and step 4 as another (teamB?).  Your teamA setup
would be just what it takes to get /d/arkboot into shape.
teamB does "the real thing" thereafter.

(If you care, I now tend to name partitions that are purely
sysadmin-ish [i.e. no sane user would ever want to look
there] /sys/<something> rather than /d/<something>.  I still
use the latter for quite misc data, e.g. /d/vendor-stuff and
/d/open-src.  The verilab2 team stuff uses a bit of both :-)
