My idea (obviously sketchy...) was... Let's say you have an
ARK package 'emacs-pkgsrc': it effectively says "go install
Emacs in pkgsrc land".  The pkgsrc stuff starts running, and
has to install another 40 (pkgsrc) packages in order to
install Emacs.  *I don't care* -- that's
under-the-hood/invisible.  Also, because I don't
deploy/reveal with the pkgsrc stuff, the user isn't going to
see those extra 40 packages anyway.  They're still simply
going to see plain old /our/bin/emacs -- which just happens
to have been carefully maintained by the NetBSD guys :-)
