Oh, you're right. I put /opt/sfw/bin early in my PATH. /opt/sfw/bin/printf is part of Solaris (it's in the SFWcoreu package) but it is optional and obviously not everybody puts it early. With PATH='/usr/bin' I get the broken (non-POSIX) behavior.
