I regret the delay in responding to this issue.  Can you please provide a very
short configure.ac that demonstrates the problem?  I could try to make one up
based on your description, but it's likely that I would produce something too
different from what you have.

I must also warn you in advance that, depending on exactly what you mean by
"define symbols whose names are expanded from variables", the resolution may
be "we can't support that".
