I regret the delay in responding to this bug report

At a glance this looks like a bug in libtool, not autoconf.  The generated
configure script, by itself, does not give me enough information to
investigate any further.  Please construct, and then attach, the *shortest*
configure.ac you can possibly construct that still reproduces the problem.  If
this configure.ac requires an aclocal.m4, attach that as well, and also every
file that is m4_include'd by aclocal.m4.  (This may be enough files, all told,
that it makes sense to collect them into a tar or zip archive.)
