I introduced that comment in 2001, in Autoconf commit 
4c359a43491c37203e08f2350cff1043a87ca18b.

I probably met Lee when I gave a talk at Bell Labs in the 1970s. 
Although I don't remember him personally, given the overall attitudes of 
the people that I met I expect Lee would have appreciated rather than 
disapproved of the comment.
