Hi Karl,
thanks for you ongoing work on Automake! It is sad to see you have to
push this alone. I totally understand that you have other obligations
and interests.

I think I cannot help with the open bug. I hope other can chip in and
support Automake.

I am not part of a coordinated approach. I recently took part in the
openSuse's packaging of autoconf 2.72, CMake 3.29, and Ninja 1.12.
Automake 1.17 remained in the back of my head to be close to a release.

In general I advocate projects to migrate away from Autotools. I know
this won't happen for the GNU stack (like flex, GCC, GDB) and other
software at least for another decade. So we need to maintain Autotools
and keep pace with recently accelerated development of C and stricter
rules enforced by GCC 14 and Clang 16.
As a packager I wished to get more frequent releases for libtool, m4,
flex to reduce the number of compatibility issues and deprecation
warnings in packages relying on Autotools.

Bye
Christoph
