afbackup CVS

Hello list, hello people,

A few questions about afbackup development - for the rationale see the
bottom of the mail.

1) What is the current development state of afbackup?
  - do the interested parties feel that the code base is satisfactory and
    need not evolve any further [1]?
  - or is the codebase idle because the interested parties don't have the
    ressources and/or the required motivation to continue its development?

2) Is there interest to open a public CVS containing the code?

3) Is there interest to continue development?

4) Are there any - even minimal - regression test available for afbackup?


Rationale:

We're developing and marketing an easy to use web-frontend for afbackup
[2]. As such we need to work with the afbackup source - patch, enhance,
fix it. CVS helps a lot in coordination, code review, release procedure.

We think that this could also benefit possibly interested other third
party developers.

Also - being involved with Debian maintenance we know that separating the
upstream codebase from the distribution codebase is lowering the
complexity of the software maintenance process and helping stabilizing the
software itself.

So, we'd like to open a public CVS repository for afbackup.

However since forking brings a lot of unnecessary trouble with it - such
as f.ex. merging between trees - we'd prefer to have an OK from "above".
The optimum would be a CVS repo on sourceforge site itself. Neither would
we mind if someone else would take on the critical CVS gatekeeper role.

Finaly - in case we'd maintain the CVS ourselves we'll probably be very
conservative about third party patches, since we're not sure how many
ressources we can afford to commit to the task - and we do want afbackup
to remain very stable.
